The album has sold more than 33 million copies around the world and is the most critically acclaimed of her albums to this point. She won the Grammy Award in 1996 for Album of the year. The album was also made into a musical of the name in 2017 which garnered fifteen Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. It also appeared in the 2003 and 2020 editions of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time Guides.
