 Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (/oU,ka:sioU ko:r'tezAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez (/oU,ka:sio (listen); Spanish: [o'kasjokor'tes]; born on 13 October 1989) is also known by her initials AOC is an American politician and activist. She has been the U.S. representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019, as a member of the Democratic Party. The district covers eastern Bronx, Rikers Island, New York City, and some parts of the north-central region of Queens. She beat Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, in what was widely seen as the biggest surprise victory of the 2018 midterm elections. She was able to win the general election in November by defeating Republican Anthony Pappas. She was elected again in the 2020 election, beating John Cummings.Taking the office at the age of 29 years old, Ocasio-Cortez is the tiniest woman ever to be elected to the United States Congress. Her name has been praised for her large social media presence in relation to her fellow Congress members.
