Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (/oU,ka:sioU ko:r'tezAOC (/oU,ka:sioU ko:r' (listen); Spanish: [o'kasjo kor'tes] born on October 13, 1989), also known by her initials AOC, is an American politician and activist. She has been the U.S. representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019 as an official of the Democratic Party. The district includes the eastern portion of the Bronx and a portion of north-central Queens and Rikers Island, which is located in New York City.On June 26 the 26th of June, 2018, Ocasio-Cortez drew national recognition when she won the primary election of the Democratic Party for New York's 14th congressional district. She defeated Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent and was widely seen as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm election primaries. She defeated Republican Anthony Pappas to win the general election in November. Ocasio-Cortez was elected to the United States Congress in 2020, beating John Pappas.
