Brittanie Nichole Cecil (March 20 1988 - - March 18, 2002) was an avid hockey fan who passed away from injuries sustained when a puck was deflected into the stands and hit her in the left temple at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 16, 2002. This was the first and only death of an avid fan in NHL history. Following Cecil's death, the league introduced mandatory netting on both sides of every arena during 2002-03 NHL season to protect fans from hockey pucks flying off the ice. Cecil was a native of West Alexandria in Ohio, was a soccer player and avid sports fan. She participated in the Orange Crush's national tournament when she was eleven years old. When the team was selected for the state tournament, the mayor Carol Lunsford declared the day Orange Crush Day. Cecil was a student at Twin Valley South Middle School as a cheerleader as well as a student council member. She was also an honor student. She also attended Thompson Secondary School.
