Michael Richard Pence was a U.S. politician, broadcaster, and lawyer born in Columbus, Indiana on June 7 1959. He is an American politician, broadcaster, and lawyer who served as the 48th Vice President of the United States from 2017 to 2021. From 2013 until 2017, he served as the 50th Governor of Indiana as a Republican. Pence was also a member of Congress from 2001 until 2013. During the Korean War, his father served as a soldier in the United States Army and was presented with the Bronze Star in 1953, which Pence has in his office, along with an acknowledgement letter and receiving image. The father of Pence is German-Irish, and his mother has Irish roots. His paternal grandfather Edward Joseph Pence Sr. worked in the Chicago stockyards. Named in honor of Richard Michael Cawley (his maternal grandfather), he came from Doocastle in County Mayo, Ireland to the United States via Ellis Island. His maternal grandparents came originally from Doonbeg in County Clare, Ireland. In 1977, Pence graduated from Columbus North High School. He earned a Bachelor's degree in history from Hanover College in 1981. In 1986, he earned an Juris Doctorate from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' Robert H. McKinney Law School. He became the chapter president of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity while at Hanover. From 1981 until 1983, after graduation, he worked as an admissions counselor at the university. Like his family members, Pence was a Roman Catholic and a Democrat during his boyhood and early adulthood.
