In the role of the apparent successor of Tommy Maddox's position, Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Ben Rothelisberger. He went to become the NFL by storm in 2004. Rothelisberger was promoted to starting quarterback after Maddox was injured in Pittsburgh's second week loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers season was forever altered. The Steelers were dubbed Big Ben due to an impressive build, which was untypical for quarterbacks. He took the lead in his first official start in the third week of 2004 and then won in week four. He and the Steelers continued to win in subsequent games and the Steelers, a year removed from a disappointing 2003 season, had become an AFC force. It was over the Halloween weekend in 2004 when Rothelisberger finally "arrived" when Pittsburgh played the defending Superbowl champion New England Patriots, who had won an NFL record 21 consecutive victories. The streak ended in the half-hour mark when Rothelisberger played the Steelers to victory by 34-20 which gave Pittsburgh the advantage in the AFC. Rothelisberger gave the Philidelphia Eagles 27-3 defeat on Sunday, their first loss of the season. This caused the Terrell Owens-Donovan Mcabb incident.
