If you had informed Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, a fourteen-year-old Franciscan seminary student that he'd someday be Tom Cruise, one the 100 greatest film stars of all-time the young man would likely have smiled and said that his dream was to be priest. The sensitive and religious teenager born in Syracuse, New York in 1962, was bound to become one of the highest valued and sought-after actors of screen history. His parents were both born in Louisville, Kentucky, and he is of German, Irish, and English roots. He was a young man who moved around a lot throughout his childhood. When he was 14 he was a student to 15 different schools in the U.S. He finally settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey with his mother and her new husband. When he was in high school Tom was interested in becoming priest but very soon he developed an interest in acting. He abandoned his plans to become a priest. He quit school, and when he was 18, he left for New York and a possible acting career. The next 15 years of his life are a cult. He made his debut in film by playing a minor role in Endless Love (1981) and from the beginning, he displayed an unquestionable appeal at the box office for both female and male audiences.
