Shirley MacLean Beaty was Shirley MacLaine's mother. Her mother, Kathlyn Corinne (MacLean) was a drama instructor from Nova Scotia, Canada, and her father, Ira Owens Beaty, an instructor of psychology and an agent for real estate, was from Virginia. The brother of her, Warren Beatty, was born on March 30 1937. Her heritage includes English and Scottish.Shirley was the tallest among her ballet classes at the Washington School of Ballet. When she was graduating from Washington-Lee High School, she packed her bags and left for New York. The producer was constantly mispronouncing her name while she was auditioning for Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Me and Juliet". Shirley MacLean Beaty became Shirley MacLaine after which she changed her name to Shirley MacLaine. In the following years, she was participant in "The Pajama Game" as a chorus member and as an understudy to Carol Haney. Shirley had planned to end the show to take the lead role in Can-Can However, she was able to take over for Haney who had injured her ankle and was unable to perform. A few months later, she was able to once more fill in for Carol following another injury. The same night Hal B. Wallis, the film producer, was present.
