Shirley MacLean Beaty was Shirley MacLaine's mother. Kathlyn Corinne MacLean was her mother. She was a drama instructor in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty was an eminent psychologist and real estate agent from Virginia. Warren Beatty was her brother and was born March 30 1937. Her heritage includes English and Scottish.Shirley was tallest among her ballet class at the Washington School of Ballet. After she graduated from Washington-Lee High School, she packed her bags and headed to New York. The director kept making mistakes when she was auditioning for Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Me and Juliet". Then she changed her name from Shirley MacLean Beaty to Shirley MacLaine. In the following years, she was participant in "The Pajama Game" as a chorus member as well as an understudy for Carol Haney. Shirley had planned to quit the show to take the lead role in Can-Can However, she ended up taking over for Haney who had injured her ankle and couldn't perform. A few months later, she would again substitute for Carol after another injury. It happened on the very same evening as Hal B. Wallis, the producer of the film. Wallis was the one who signed MacLaine to Paramount Pictures' five-year contract. A few months later she left to film The Trouble with Harry (1955)
