Natalie Portman was born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem, Israel, on June 9 1981. Her parents are Avner Hershlag (an Israeli-born doctor) as well as Shelley Stevens (an American-born artist, from Cincinnati, Ohio), who serve as Natalie's agent. Both parents are Ashkenazi Jewish. Natalie's family moved from Israel and moved to Washington, D.C. when she was just a few years old. After a few more relocations the family eventually moved to New York, where she still lives until this day. Her academic achievements enabled her to go to Harvard University. She graduated with high honors. She was discovered by an agent in a pizza restaurant at eleven years old. At 11 years old she was advised to take on a career as a model, however she eventually decided she wanted to be an actor. Although she was in many live performances, Leon: The Professional (1994) which is also referred to as "Leon") marked her debut in film. Natalie was a part of Heat (1995), Beautiful Girls(1996) and Mars Attacks! (1996).
