Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962). Marilyn Monroe was a model, actress, singer, and one of the most well-known women of the 20th century. Monroe is a symbol of beauty and fame for women. Her mother, Norma Jeane Mortenson (born June 19, 1926) is widely recognized as one the most influential people of American popular culture. Gladys Pearl Baker (nee Monroe) was her mother. Her father was unknown and she was baptized as Norma Jeane Baker. Her mother Gladys suffered from a troubled mental state, and was struggling to raise her children. In the beginning, for six years of her life, Marilyn was raised by her foster parents Albert and Ida Bolender in the town of Hawthorne, California. Her mother tried to take back Marilyn but she had an emotional breakdown. Marilyn was shifted between orphanages and foster homes. Due to her childhood trauma, she became timid and reserved.
