Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa was born on August 1, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the son of Coni (Lemke) who is a photographer as well as Joseph Momoa, a painter. His father is Native Hawaiian and Samoan, while his mother is Iowan and is of German, Irish and Native American descent. Jason was raised by his mom in Norwalk (Iowa). He moved to Hawaii following high school. He was able to land a leading role over thousands of other hopefuls. He then spent the following years traveling the globe after the show ended. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2001 to continue his acting career. After the TV series North Shore (2004) ended, he was cast in 2004 as Ronon Dex, who was the lead of Stargate: Atlantis (2004). The series earned an avid following. In 2010, he appeared in the Emmy-nominated HBO series Game of Thrones (2011) as the role of the Dothraki King, Khal Drogo. To show the producers that he was Khal Drogo, he performed the Haka, a traditional war dance of the Maori of New Zealand. The audition was with the casting director that had cast the titular role in the reboot of Conan the Barbarian (2011)
