Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. He is one of the three children of a beautician mother, Lennis, from Georgia and an Pentecostal minister father Denzel Washington Sr. who hails from Virginia. Denzel was a high school graduate who school, enrolled at Fordham University with the intention of becoming journalist. However, he caught the acting bug while appearing in drama productions for students and following his graduation, he relocated to San Francisco and enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater. He left A.C.T. within a year, and went on to find work as an actor. His first acting gig was with the St. Mary's City summer stage production of the stock theatre. The play was titled "Wings of the Morning" and was about the birth of Maryland, which is now the state of Maryland. It also focuses on the beginnings of Maryland's colonial assembly, which is a legislative body. While the majority of the dialogue was written, Mathias DaSousa played the historic role. Then he began to look for screen roles in earnest. He was a versatile actor and a powerful presence that made it easy to be found in numerous TV productions.
