Laura Leggett Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964. She was born into a family of theatre. Her father was a prominent playwright Romulus Linney, whose great-grandfather was a congressman from North Carolina. Miriam Anderson Leggett, her mother, is a nurse. Linney grew up in a home away from her father since her parents divorced at the tender age of 6. However, Linney was surrounded by his profession from the time she was a child. She graduated from Brown University in 1986 and pursued acting studies at Juilliard and the Arts Theatre School in Moscow and, thereafter, began a professional career on the Broadway stage, receiving acclaim for her performances in plays such as "Hedda Gabler" and "Six Degrees of Separation".Linney's film career started in the early 1990s with small roles in the films Lorenzo's Oil (1992) and Dave (1993). The PBS films that adapted Armistead Mapin's "Tales of the City" she was Mary Anne Singleton on Tales of the City (1993), More Tales of the City(1998), and Further Tales of the City (2000). Linney was Linney's debut part on the big screen. She played the ex-girlfriend of Richard Gere's character in Primal fear (1996). Her exceptional performance was praised and offered her a wider selection of roles. Clint Eastwood selected Linney to portray his daughter, a prominent part in Absolute Power (1997). This was followed by another billing in The Truman Show (1998).
