Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon is the daughter of Betty Witherspoon (a registered nurse) and John Draper Witherspoon (a military surgeon). She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 22 in 1976. Reese spent the first 4 years of her life in Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany and her father worked there as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army reserves. The family relocated to the USA shortly after and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Reese was soon exposed to the world of entertainment. At age 7, she began modeling. It led to her appearing in a variety of local TV commercials. At the age of 11, she was a contestant when she was awarded the Ten-State Talent Fair. In 1990, her debut acting role was in Robert Mulligan's The Man in the Moon (1991). The film was directed by a 14-year-old boy who was praised by the critics. Her roles in larger films like Jack the Bear (1993) as well as A Far Off Place (1993) came shortly after. Reese graduated from Harpeth Hall in Nashville in 1994 and made the decision to attend Stanford University, where she would study English literature. However, her collegiate plans were soon ruined when she accepted roles in two major motion films: Fear (1996), together with Mark Wahlberg, and Freeway (1996) with Kiefer Sutherland. Although neither film was a massive box-office hit but they did establish Reese as a rising starlet in Hollywood and open the doors for bigger and better film roles. Those bigger roles came in films such as Pleasantville (1998), Election (1999) and Cruel Intentions (1999).
