Minions: The Rise of Gru (also known as Minions 2) is a 2022 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It's the sequel to Minions, the spin-off of Minions (2015) as well as the fifth installment in the Despicable Me series. It was written and directed by Kyle Balda, co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val, and was produced by Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud, from a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel and a story written by Fogel and Brian Lynch. The film was delayed by two years because of the COVID-19 virus. Minions:The Rise of Gru received its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13, 2022. It was released theatrically in the United States by Universal Pictures on July 1, 2022. Though the film received mostly positive reviews, some critics deemed it an improvement on its predecessor. They were impressed by the film's musical numbers as well as its the entertainment value for families, humor and aesthetics. However, the plot was criticised. Minions: The Rise of Gru was a box office success, grossing over $939 million worldwide and making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2022 and the highest-grossing animated film of the year.
