In 1988, Perez met Grammy-winning Mexican American singer Selena. Two years later, Selena's family hired him to play in her band, and they soon fell in love. Perez was dismissed from the band by Selena's father, who initially didn't agree with their relationship. He eventually accepted the relationship. Perez and Selena were married in Nueces County Texas on April 2 on the 2nd of April, 1992. Selena also legally added Perez to her name. In 1995, Selena was killed, and Perez was a father to two kids with Vanessa. They divorced in March 2008.At the 2000 Grammy Awards his Rock group Chris Perez Band, Chris Perez Band, won the Grammy Award for "Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album" for their debut album "Resurrection". Perez dedicated the song, "Best I Can," to Selena. In 2001, the Chris Perez Band made their final album titled "Una Noche Mas" (English: One Night Night).After the Chris Perez Band disbanded, Perez joined his former brother-in-law's (A.B. Quintanilla III ) band of the music group Kumbia Kings. But, Quintanilla had conflicts with the group and quit the Kumbia Kings along with Perez. Quintanilla formed a new band, Kumbia All-Starz, with Perez as its guitarist.
