Bettany Hughes

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA (born May 1967) is an English historian, author, and broadcaster who specializes in classical history. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth and the story of Istanbul. She is actively involved in her efforts to promote the teaching of classics in UK state schools. Hughes was awarded an OBE in 2019. Her birthplace was in West London. She is the daughter and sister of Simon Hughes, a journalist and cricketer. Hughes received her education at Notting Hill, Ealing High School, Ealing and St Hilda's College in Oxford. She is the mother of journalist and cricketer Simon Hughes. She was presented with the Naomi Sargant Special Award for outstanding broadcasting in the field of education in 2009, and also the Norton Medlicott Awards for historical service in 2012.
