Americans will always remember Benjamin Franklin as one our founding fathers. That is fitting because Benjamin Franklin was not just the most well-known of our citizens at the time of our nation's founding, but he was also an integral part of that birth that he has been known as "The First American."As a member of the Second Continental Congress, Franklin was instrumental in the creation of the Declaration of Independence. As a member of the Constitutional Convention, he helped draft the Constitution. However, Franklin's role in our founding has been eclipsed in modern memory by his many other accomplishments. He was an incredibly prolific inventor. His trademark bifocals, Franklin Stove, and artificial fertilizer were only some of his numerous inventions. He published Poor Richard's Almanac and ran his own newspaper. He also published the first political cartoons in the colonies. He founded the University of Pennsylvania, as also America's first public library and hospital. His discoveries went beyond his famous kite experiment. They included determination and mapping of ocean currents.
