Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus in his full Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (born on April 26, 121CE, Rome [Italy] - passed away 17 March 180, Vindobona (Vienna (Austria) or Sirmium (Pannonia)), Roman emperor (161-181). He is most famous for his Meditations of Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius has been an icon of the Golden Age in the Roman Empire for several generations. His paternal grandfather Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augus, was already consul for a second time, and was prefect of Rome. Marcus his mother, Marcus Annius Verus, was married to the person who would become the next Roman emperor. Marcus thus was related to several of the most prominent families in the new Roman establishment that had strengthened its social and political power under the Flavian Emperors (69-96), and, indeed the spirit of the establishment is relevant to Marcus's actions and attitude. The ruling class of the first age of the Roman Empire The Julio-Claudian, was a bit different from that of the late Republic It was urban Roman (despising outsiders), extravagant, cynical and morally imprudent.
