If you had told Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, 14 years old Franciscan seminary student that he would one day be Tom Cruise, one the 100 most famous movie stars of all time, he would probably have smiled and said that his dream was to become priest. However, this sensitive, deeply religious youngster born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York, was destined to become one of the highest paid and most sought after actors in film history.Tom is the sole son (among four children) of nomadic parents, Mary Lee (Pfeiffer), who was a special education teacher and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. Both of his parents hail born in Louisville, Kentucky, and the actor has German, Irish, and English ancestry. He was a child who moved around a lot throughout his early years. At the age of 14, he had been to fifteen schools throughout the U.S. Together with his mother and new husband, he finally settled down in Glen Ridge. While in high school, Tom would like to be a priest but pretty soon his interest shifted to acting. He resigned from his dream of becoming a priest. He dropped out of school, and when he was 18, he left towards New York and a possible acting career. The following 15 years have become legendary. His debut in film was Endless Love (1981), which was a minor role that he played. He immediately demonstrated the appeal of his film to female and male viewers.
