Salma Hayek was conceived in Coatzacoalcos (Mexico) on September 2, 1966. Her father is Lebanese and her mother is Mexican/Spanish. She saw Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), in a local theater and decided that she would like to become an actress. At the age of 12, she when she received her acceptance into the Academy of the Sacred Heart, New Orleans, Louisiana. After attending Mexico City's prestigious university Universidad Iberoamericana, she felt ready to pursue acting seriously.She was soon offered the lead part in Teresa (1989) which was a massively successful soap opera that earned her the star status in her home country of Mexico. She was keen to create films and to explore her passions and talent as she left Mexico (1989) as well as Teresa (1991). Fans devastated by the news spread rumors that she was in an affair with Mexico's President and left to avoid his wife's wrath. She travelled to Los Angeles. With a childish enthusiasm, she approached Hollywood and quickly discovered that Latina actors were typically cast as prostitutes, mistress maids or mistress maids. By late 1992, she had landed only minor roles. She was featured on Street Justice (1991), The Sinbad Show (1993), Nurses (1991), and also as a sexy maid on Dream On (1990)
