Francine Joy Drescher is an American actor, comedian, writer and activist. She is famous for her character "Fran" in the popular TV show 'The Nanny' (1993-1999) and for her distinctive nasal voice and thick New York accent. Following her debut on screen by playing a small part in the 1977 film 'Saturday night Fever, she appeared in American Hot Wax as well as Wes Craven's spooky tale "Stranger in Our Home" in 1978. She launched her TV career by appearing in several series while, at the same time receiving recognition for movies such as 'Gorp, 'The Hollywood Knights,' 'Doctor Detroit,' 'This is Spinal Tap,' and the 'UHF.' However, she became an international star after her appearance as "Fran Fine-Sheffield" in her own sitcom 'The Nanny,' in which she was nominated twice for 'Emmy Awards' and 'Golden Globes' each in the "Best Actress in a Comedy Television Series' category during the run of the show. She is a survivor of the uterine cancer, and an activist for LGBT rights as well as healthcare. Her role as an ambassador for public diplomacy and women's issues in the US State Department is what is what makes her famous. She divorced producer Peter Marc Jacobson.
