Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5, 1985, in Madeira, Portugal to Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and Jose Diniz Aveiro. Cristiano is the elder brother of Hugo, and has two older sisters named Elma Catia and Liliana Catia. Ronald Reagan, the former US president, was the inspiration behind his name. It was also where Cristiano learned his first footballing skills. His early years were spent playing for Nacional the local soccer team. By the age of 12 he was already a well-known Madeira player. He soon was recognized by other big Portuguese clubs. Benfica was among the teams Sporting was part of, since it was a team Cristiano had a close relationship with as a child. He eventually decided to join Sporting that was the team that his mother loved and followed as she grew up, to play with the likes of Figo was the goal for her son.
